About the Movie

Poland, December 1945: World War II is finally over and Red Cross nurse Mathilde is treating the last of the French survivors of the German camps. When a panicked nun appears at the clinic begging Mathilde to follow her back to the convent, the scene she finds is shocking: a holy sister about to give birth, with several more in advanced stages of pregnancy. A non-believer, Mathilde enters the sisters’ fiercely private world, dictated by the rituals of their order and the strict Rev. Mother (Agata Kulesza, Ida). Facing an unprecedented crisis of faith, the nuns increasingly turn to Mathilde as their belief and traditions clash with harsh realities.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It gives us war as seen by the women it rolls over and it quietly exults as they help each other back to their feet. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jul 14, 2016

Fresh: Fontaine ("Gemma Bovary," "Coco Before Chanel") has just the right touch. There is no melodrama here, simply women of faith living day to day. – Bill Goodykoontz, Arizona Republic, Jul 29, 2016

Fresh: In such a dark time and place, hope does emerge. – Bruce Demara, Toronto Star, Jul 14, 2016

this movie wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. it's a pretty grim story. so to say i enjoyed it isn't quite accurate. but it moved me very much. i'll be thinking about it for awhile, too.

Added to one of my heart warming movies!

Shows how an open and understanding heart could change and save peoples lives. In this movie it emboldened the human spirit of kindness and non-judgmental view of the very human spirit.

The Innocents

5 Stars for the entire reality of this film. I was not a child or adult of abuse but I know friends who were. If you aren't socially aware of abuse then you may not get it. If you are, then this is hauntingly real. You will think about it even more after the you have seen it. I give it a total thumbs up.
