About the Movie
After receiving a distressing medical diagnosis, a listless young man flees the crushing tedium of city life, trading it all for untamed wilderness and solitude. He retreats further and further into the woods only to gradually find himself the target of increasingly inexplicable and disturbing manifestations, which point to a frightening truth: he is not alone.
Exterior Forest. Night
The point of this exercise is minimalism and immersion. The Interior harkens back to the obvious comparison THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT which was hailed for it's simple premise...THE WOODS AT NIGHT. Some horror fans hated it just becasue there was no "Witch"
which brings me to my point. If you settle into this film and watch it unfold you will appreciate the effort and forget the need for graphic violence in order to get off. There is something more cerebral going on here almost philosophical.
It begins simple enough an angry office space scenario guy hates his job, guy gets told he has a terminal illness and decides to leave the comforts of the city to live in the woods. The movie at the point shifts into a vast haunting journey as he walks deeper and deeper into the woods. The lonilness and depth of the landscape is suffocating. There are no aggresive horror tactics here (i.e. Gore, Blood all the trimmings of the genre) what is left you ask? The unsettling concept of desolation. There are physical entities which make for some very intimate creepy moments one scene in particular where the tent unzips in the dark as he sleeps.
Overall I recommend seeing this (Alone or in the dark) and let it play out give it your attention when he leaves the city and heads for the woods it makes more sense. There is no Major pay-off so DO NOT expect that, it does pull you in if you let it.
Not your typical horror film.
|| I would like to start by saying I don't normally write reviews however this film is in need of a good review. I'll start off by saying this is not your typical horror film. No gore, no loud music to have you anticipate what's coming, no jump out scenes. The movie has hardly any dialogue and has a comedic feel to it. Now that doesn't mean this film is in the least abit frighting! If you enjoy thrillers that bend the mind and make you come up with conclusions as to what was going on this is the film for you. If you Werner Herzog and beautifully shot films this is for you. If your looking for the next Eli Roth or Quentin Tarentino bloody/gory scenes this is not for you. One of the best films I've seen in a long time in this genre. I've been waiting a long time for a film like this to arise and Trevor Juras has accomplished and fulfilled my dreams. I'd strongly suggest renting/buying.
Don't waste your money
Very tedious and redundant. You never get the feeling that you're watching a horror movie. Decent musical background, but horrible plot.
