Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Proceeds in the manner of any number of war epics of the 1960s, sluggishly charting how the ostensibly ceremonial king acquired real negotiating power during a crisis - and had the resolve to lead his country into war. – Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times, Sep 21, 2017

Fresh: "The King's Choice" is a dramatic tale about a pivotal World War II moment, a story infused with tension and psychological conflict that's all the more engrossing for being fresh to us. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Oct 5, 2017

Fresh: Handsomely mounted and well acted, the film breaks no new ground but remains engrossing. – Stephen Farber, Hollywood Reporter, Jan 21, 2017

Fresh: The film is handsomely mounted, traditional in its scenecraft, superbly acted, and much less ham-handed than you might expect from a historical drama about a great man's great moment. – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice, Sep 20, 2017

A quiet war movie

if there is such a thing. About morality and war and the importance of political ideals. A very thoughtful, well-crafted film that deserved a wider cinema release in the US than it received. The Norwegian royal family cooperated with this production and many of the locations in the film are original locations.

Truly Outstanding Film

Great performances from the cast and crew, even the actors portraying Nazi functionaries. Outstanding direction and attention to detail. Of course that this is based on the Kings behavior and wisdom, true story, is all the more remarkable in the age of cowards and cheats that we live in today.

Historically Misleading.

Ignored the massive German invasion of Norway and failed to explain Hitler's full invasion plan. Instead focused only on the supposed heroics of the king, which is massively overstated. It was emotional seeing the king's realization of his duty to the Norwegian people in the final scenes of the movie which leads to his final choice.
