About the Movie

Preston Sturges is at it again. The ingenious writer-director spins out a sinfully romantic comedy in The Lady Eve, and the "lady" of the title is Barbara Stanwyck. She's a calculating card shark who fleeces passengers on transatlantic ocean liners. When she discovers that an ingenious young millionaire (Henry Fonda) is on board, the scheming Stanwyck figures he'll be a pushover if she plays her cards right. Sure enough, he does fall for her, but surprise-she also falls for him. When he's tipped off that true romance is not in the cards because she's giving him a fast shuffle, Fonda's fondness fades. Now Stanwyck realizes that if she wants to win him back, she's got to stop her double-dealing, and she does but not before she turns up a few tricks of her own. "The Lady Eve has snap, crackle and plot and, with famous character actors also on deck, the movie is a winner, hands down."-Gene Shalit

Fresh: Third writer-director effort of Preston Sturges [from a story by Monckton Hoffe] is laugh entertainment of top proportions with its combo of slick situations, spontaneous dialog and a few slapstick falls tossed in for good measure. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Barbara Stanwyck is the sexiest con woman ever captured on film. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Feb 10, 2014

Barabra Stanwick

This movie is awesome if you enjoy her comedy( there arent that many of hers she mostly did dramas) then you would probably love Christmas in Conneticut which also features Dennis Morgan and S.Z. Sakall adorable movie.

One of my Favorites!

I just adore this movie and it's one of my favorite comedies. Barbara Stanwyck is stunning, amazing, hilarious and does a wonderful job of making Henry Fonda look like a glorious geek. Perfect comedic timing on all parts, and a charming story line.

Comic genius, old school style - Fonda at his fumbling best; Stanwyck in all her comedic glory.

The plot is hilarious, the setting perfect, the acting of the two stars is perfect -- dead on dead pan from Fonda as the naive son of a millionaire brewer, and elegant (and sexy) fast talking Stanwyck as the card-shark swindler, daughter of a notorious cheat. They fall in love -- they part -- they meet again and fall in love again. If Preston Sturges ever directed a funnier movie, I haven't seen it. The supporting cast -- including William Demarest ("Uncle Charley" of the old sit-com, "My Three Sons"; you've also seen him in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," and "Rebbeca of Sunnybrook Farms" and about 100 other movies or TV show) -- is nothing shy of perfection. If you enjoy 40's screw-ball comedies, you will LOVE this offering.
