Plot Summary

Air, Water, Earth, Fire. Four nations tied by destiny when the Fire Nation launches a brutal war against the others. A century has passed with no hope in sight to change the path of this destruction. Caught between combat and courage, Aang (Noah Ringer) discovers he is the lone Avatar with the power to manipulate all four elements. Aang teams with Katara (Nicola Peltz), a Waterbender, and her brother, Sokka (Jackson Rathbone), to restore balance to their war-torn world. Based on the hugely successful Nickelodeon animated TV series, the live-action feature film "The Last Airbender" is the opening chapter in Aang's struggle to survive.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: [A] breathtakingly clueless, misconceived, stupid, humourless, unexciting, dim, dumb farrago, the worst film I've seen in years. – John Walsh, Independent, Jul 18, 2014

Rotten: A quite breathtakingly inept hodge-podge of vapid spirituality, playground chopsocky and visual effects that take 3D to an entirely new level: Zero-D. – Sukhdev Sandhu, Daily Telegraph, Jul 18, 2014

Rotten: It seems as if a good film could be made out of The Last Airbender's tale. But this is not that film. – Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, Oct 22, 2014

Rotten: The characters are completely uninvolving, the narrative incomprehensible for the most part, and the performances seem to reflect the bewilderment of the plot. – Margaret Pomeranz, At the Movies (Australia), Sep 23, 2010

How Dare He!

I don't think M. Night S. is a bad director, I believe he's in a rut, but this movie... How dare he screw up such an awesome animated series! He took out all of the good stuff, he didn't show important characters that were important to the future plot, and what was with the whole: avatars are not allowed to have a family thing? That screws up the plot twist of Zuko being roku's grandson. I could go on for hours about what's wrong with this movie. Mr. M Night Sha., you claim that this series was a family favorite, but u ruined it for everyone because u let ur own feelings and bad judgment get in the way of this awesome series and ruined fan hope of seeing it as a great live action film.

Simply awful

I realize that, as a fan, I have a harsher opinion about this movie than others. But even when it's not compared to the TV show, this film still falls flat on its face! The dialogue was terrible, the story was paced way too fast (but it felt like hours went by), the name pronunciation was obnoxious, the acting was horrendous, and the bending was more like a ballet/dance recital! The special effects were cool, but they CANNOT CARRY THE WHOLE MOVIE! And the whole "serioius" factor bugged me, too. A serious Sokka? ReallY?

I will say that I did get a kick out of laughing at line deliveries and other unintentionally funny things, which is one of two reasons why I liked this movie. The other reason being that Dev Patel was probably the best one in there, Shaun Toab was pretty good (even though Iroh had NO tea jokes), Jackson Rathbone was decent (even though Sokka wasn't funny AT ALL), and Noah Ringer is showing signs that he has the potential of being a talented actor - not to mention his martial arts skills are b.a.

I'm pretty sure M. Night Shyamalan has never watched this show. If he did, he wouldn't have thoroughly screwed up as bad as he did. And the creators of the show LET HIM DO THAT. What is WRONG with people these days????? If they decide to make another film, then whatever. It'll probably tank even worse than this epic fail of a movie. If you're looking for something to laugh at, this is your thing. But if you really want a good adaptation of the real Avatar...wait a few years. Maybe someone decent will redo this travesty and actually give us a good movie.

Thank you James Cameron For taking away the Avatar portion of the title.

My tweet says it all "It took 94 minutes for Mr Shamalamadingdong to destroy all faith in adapting animated to live action movies. Shame on you M Night, Shame!!!! "
