After a career spent helping the devout through prayer and trickery, Reverend Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) invites a film crew to document his final fraudulent days as an exorcist. Soon his faith is truly tested when a desperate plea from the father of a possessed girl (Ashley Bell) brings him face to face with the devil himself.

Fresh: An unusually restrained and genuinely eerie little movie perched at the intersection of faith, folklore and female puberty.
Rotten: The pseudo-documentary premise is paper-thin at the outset and wears out long before Botko and Gurland's script lurches toward the dumbest and least plausible solution to the mystery.
Fresh: The Last Exorcism is fueled by the arrogance of its smarmy outsider, the expert who knows everything except what an ass he is.

I felt compelled to write a brief review as I felt this movie was a complete waste of time and money. If your looking for a good horror flick, look elsewhere.

This movie is so bad I wanted to track down the director and beat him until he gave me my five bucks back. If there was a redeeming factor to this movie I missed it. Special effects were ok. The plot was thin. I have to say the actors tried but really what could they do ? You would expect a few laughs with your scares. Sadly both are absent. So if you are wasted out of your mind and have absolutely nothing else to do, then I say let it rip. Otherwise save your money and watch lifetime even it would be better then this movie.
Classic failure: Great beginning, then it goes off a cliff
Like soooo many films, horror films in particular, this film had from the outset all the makings of something truly good, not morally, but as horror films go, of course. Great atmosphere, good pace, perfectly okay acting, and a seemingly sound tale that made you want to follow it to its hopefully awesomely horrifying conclusion. Instead, as is all too often the case, the writers seem to have been drinking too much towards the end of their script. The reveal a "surprise ending" -- gawds, I'm getting so sick of that usually failed trope -- that has only a passing connection to the plot as laid out to that point. Any logical connection between the first 2/3rds of the film and the ending either got seriously edited out of the piece or, more likely, never existed except in the minds of the writers. In short, one cannot believably get from Scene One to the Final Scene without inventing a whole lot of story that we never see, not even hinted at. Lame. So, what *could* have been a great story of possession becomes, well, more like an entirely different film, and one that borrows more from cliche cheese-o-rama B-flicks from the 1970s than from the better work done recently. So sad. I'd suggest that you watch the film for the good it does achieve, and then simply stop it before the big ending and imagine the perfect ending yourself, because I promise you that the filmmakers didn't deliver one.
