About the Movie
Based on the hit musical by Jason Robert Brown, a struggling actress (Anna Kendrick) and her novelist boyfriend (Jeremy Jordan) recount the rise and fall of their 5 year love affair.
Fantastic stage to screen adaptation
Saw this film several months ago at TIFF. I'm a HUGE fan of the stage show, so I was unsure if I'd approve of the film version. I knew Jason Robert Brown (Composer/lyrics for L5Y) was heavily involved. So, I was hoping that meant the integrity of the story, characters, and music would be kept in tact. I could not have been more excited as I sat thru the film (twice). Richard LaGranvenese did a remarkable job of take the musical from stage to screen. It couldn't have been an easy feat as the characters (on stage) sing directly to the audience, and really have only one moment where they're together. Somehow he made it work, without losing each characters' point of view. Jeremy and Anna were well cast, and have fantastic chemistry. The soundtrack is my favorite version of this show. Their voices perfectly suit the characters as Brown wrote them. All in all I highly recommend this for any musical theater lover, or anyone who enjoys unique storytelling.
Does the stage show justice!
I have been a fan of the stage show and love the music. Saw this movie at TIFF and was so happy with the outcome. Sad. Funny. Romantic. Heart wrenching. Bravo! I already bought the movie as I will definitely watch over and over.
I saw this movie at the Toronto International Film Festival and after watching it a second time, I can definitely say it's one of my favorite films. Anna and Jeremy both have outstanding performances. This movie is definitely worth buying, renting or seeing at least once.
