About the Movie

When Apollo astronaut Gene Cernan stepped on the moon in December 1972 he left his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust. Only now, over forty years later, is he ready to share his epic but deeply personal story of fulfillment, love and loss. Cernan’s burning ambition carried him from a quiet Chicago suburb to the spectacular and hazardous environment of space, and ultimately, to the moon. Five years in the making, The Last Man on the Moon unveils a wealth of rare archive, and takes Cernan back to the launch pads of Cape Kennedy, to Arlington National Cemetery and to his Texas ranch, where he finds respite from a past that refuses to let him go. Sharing home movies, scrapbooks and intimate moments with his closest friends and family, he brings his spine-tingling experiences to the big screen more vividly than any moonwalker has done before.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: You already know the history told in "The Last Man on the Moon," but this story just never grows old. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Feb 25, 2016

Fresh: Cernan knows how to spin a great yarn, and if you do zone out for a moment, he can quickly reel you back in with the time he nearly died on his Gemini 9 mission or the surprisingly fierce politics behind his being chosen for the Apollo 10 crew. – Dylan Kickham, Entertainment Weekly, Mar 4, 2016

Fresh: The film traces Cernan's career trajectory, going back to his days in San Diego as a hot-shot naval aviator, blending terrific archival footage with contemporary perspectives to quietly poetic effect. – Michael Rechtshaffen, Los Angeles Times, Feb 25, 2016

Fresh: Take a pinch of Top Gun, stir in a generous dollop of The Right Stuff, add a light sprinkling of Mad Men and you have the formula for this uplifting documentary portrait of former Apollo astronaut Eugene Cernan. – Stephen Dalton, Hollywood Reporter, Feb 24, 2016

…at the speed of thought...

Released on my 70th birthday (today) I was instantly transported back to a time when we all believed that anything was possible. To listen to Gene and his contemporaries “straight talk” makes this documentary more than special…it transcends. Even the feelings of those “on the ground…families and friends…were remembered with respect. Great job, all!

GREAT documentary !!!

I think Gene Cernan really did a GREAT job documenting this era of American history. He transported us back in time to an era where men were men and took chances to be great.

Seriously this is a great documentary. Well told…well filmed…

I grew-up watching these missions when I was a kid…I hope to see the day we go to Mars. That would really be something.

Remarkabilty refreshing

After watching many documentaries about our very existance in infinate space, I was totally sucked to this documentary about the last man to ever step on the moon. A truly inspiring story of the struggles and sacrifices that astronauts have to endure.
