Epic Action Drama. Set in Japan during the 1870s, The Last Samurai tells the story of Capt. Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a respected American military officer hired by the Emperor of Japan to train the country's first army in the art of modern warfare. As the Emperor attempts to eradicate the ancient Imperial Samurai warriors in preparation for more Westernized and trade-friendly government policies, Algren finds himself unexpectedly impressed and influenced by his encounters with the Samurai, which places him at the center of a struggle between two eras and two worlds, with only his own sense of honor to guide him.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: The script lays on hokey narration and bombastic dialogue.
Fresh: It's easy to stand back and wax ironic about The Last Samurai. But it's not all that difficult to succumb to its full-spirited romanticism either.
Fresh: The Last Samurai is an idyll in which the savageries of existence are transcended by spiritual devotion. That's a beautiful dream, and it gives the film a deep pleasingness, but the fullness of life and its blackest ambiguities are sacrificed.
Fresh: Cruise's undeniable star voltage makes it all palatable, and the film is gorgeous to behold and even to listen to.
One Of My Favorites
One of my favorite movies. A drunken Soldier gets a chance to discover what it truly means to be a Warrior and redeem his past mistakes. Although I would rather purchase the movie. Mark this up if you'd like the ability to purchase the great film.
