About the Movie

Lighthouse keeper Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and radiant, spirited Isabel (Alicia Vikander) live together in married bliss on a remote, rugged island off the coast of Australia. But their windswept world is turned upside down when Isabel learns that she’s unable to bear a child. One day, a drifting lifeboat washes ashore with a crying baby in it. The dilemma the couple now face will echo far beyond the island, engulfing and irrevocably impacting their world – and that of a stranger (Rachel Weisz) – in a passionate story about love, hope, and a fateful choice.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Fassbenderand Vikander, who fell in love during the making of the film, fully commit to their roles and hold us in their grip. The movie, sad to say, can't keep its head above water. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Sep 2, 2016

Rotten: I suspect a doomed romance of another sort has unfurled: Acclaimed indie director falls for slush bucket best-seller and thinks he can "redeem" it with great cinematography and Oscar-winning actors. – Tom Shone, Newsweek, Nov 1, 2016

Fresh: The Light Between Oceans is stunning to see, and the performances are of the highest caliber, but it's all packaged in a story that just doesn't earn its stay, or our tears. – Lindsey Bahr, Associated Press, Sep 2, 2016

Fresh: Contrivances and melodrama aside, it is emotionally true and that's often the most important thing for a film of this nature. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Sep 2, 2016

Critics are idiots, I've realized

This movie was by far the best film I've seen in years. I came away from it, unable to even compare it to other movies because I can't remember one that came close to having such an impactful message of love and forgiveness. Critics have slammed this film because it dares to break the mold of modern films, and actually hail back to a time when people had the patience and the attention span to watch a feature length film without getting bored if there weren't explosions and fight scenes every 15 minutes. I don't want to give anything away because it is a visual and emotional experience that one should see without any spoilers. All I can say is, watch this movie.

Warning: this is an adult-audience film, with a few bed scenes.

Blown away

Incredible performances by the two of them

Two Sides To Every Coin

Movie did a great job of illustrating the "Janus Effect". Talented cast, great acting and beautiful setting deliver the message of right & wrong, forgiveness & resentment and desires & virtues.
What bothered & confused me [spoiler alert], was that although the bio-mom embraced her husband's adage of forgiveness, why didn't she teach it to her daughter by allowing daughter to visit Tom & Isabel?
I would recommend this movie. It has an overall good message.
