Rotten: Your expectations of how bad The Lone Ranger is can't trump the reality.
Rotten: "The Lone Ranger" is a pounding headache of a movie - loud, dumb, overlong and pointless.
Rotten: I mean, no wonder Depp's in disguise. No wonder Hammer wears a mask. Wouldn't you?
Rotten: Who, exactly, was this bipolar oater made for?
Forget the Critics: This Movie is Fun!!!
We saw this last night and it was a blast. The action was non-stop and the story line...hey...it worked. It's a Western for Pete's sake! The critics really over analyzed this one and totally missed the boat. Go see it!!!
More Like "The Lame Ranger"
I'm usually a huge fan of Johnny Depp movies, especially when he's playing a quirky character like Edward Scissorhands or Captain Jack Sparrow (to name a few), so my anticipation for "The Lone Ranger," in which he stars as the hero's faithful Comanche sidekick Tonto, was pretty high. With a fun Old West premise and a big-name cast to work with, this movie really did have the potential to be a terrific summer blockbuster. Unfortunately, it wasn't. Now, don't get me wrong. It isn't an entirely terrible flick, just not a very well-executed one. The story tries to balance so many different genre clichés that it ends up feeling a lot more derivative than engaging. At the same time, the characters here aren't exactly the most interesting bunch to watch for 150 minutes. While Armie Hammer and Depp do make for an appealing pair of leads, they don't quite share a chemistry strong enough to make us genuinely excited for the adventure ahead. The acting itself is pretty so-so, but nothing to rave about. I'd probably even go as far as saying that Depp's performance here is much weaker than his past portrayals of other better characters. I mean, he's still fairly enjoyable to watch when he speaks in a funny accent and does strange behaviors, but the gimmick this time around doesn't feel as playful or inspired as it used to. As for all the other cast members, there are just so many of them that I practically lost my interest in their forgettable dilemmas about halfway through the bloated story. On a brighter note, at least the stylish art direction, wonderful costume designs, and scenic Western landscapes make the film constantly nice to look at. Plus, the flashily fast-paced action sequences, despite being over-the-top and a bit too long at times, are solidly entertaining. If only more attention had been paid to the script, characters, and obnoxious length, then this could've been a fantastic Western action comedy. But as it is, "The Lone Ranger" is just an extreme case of style over substance. It may please less demanding moviegoers, but for everyone else, it's not a must-see.
First of all I love Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp so that was a plus but the movie was action packed and entertaining the entire way through absolutely loved it!!! One of the best films this summer
