Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The fear of female sexuality has been a staple of horror movies forever, but "The Love Witch" does more than simply subvert or parody the erotic underpinnings of the genre.
Fresh: It's like a Bewitched episode stretched out to two hours. But boy, is it gorgeous to look at.
Fresh: The best kind of homage or parody, the type that honors every thrill and quirk of the original while improving on it.
Fresh: It is a true auteur creation that is absurd and exhilarating, a fun-house mirror reflecting our times and the folly of women who seek to control a patriarchal system by submitting to it.
At first, this seemed like a 60s / 70s tribute, but it's really as contemporary as anything you'll see. And Samantha Robinson is one hot witch. Exquisite!
Can't say enough good things about this movie!
Succeeds at it's primary intent
It does a wonderful job capturing B Movie delierium from the late 60s to early 70s, and adds a few slightly more modern subtexts, but the subtexts go only as far as proposing a theory, rather than a point. It a mod-wicca fairytale rendered in HD technicolor hues that can nail moments visually, but also show the plumbers-crack seams of a high school drama final peeking out between the frames. There are times when the only explanation for what is happening onscreen is that a producer wanted to get their neighbors or friends in the movie at any cost. The main character is gorgeous as a wicca-siren would need to be to make this all work, and that is itself touched on during the movie. There is a feminist angle laying around in there, yet the film more goes out of it's way to demonstrate the dangers of taking a feminist viewpoint to heart. Most of the critical reviews from Rotten Tomatoes, which strongly influenced my choice to rent the movie, are off-base. The best way to see this is as a faithful HD reproduction of this kind of film from this period, because in the end, that's all there is there.
