About the Movie
The Lovers is a refreshing, funny look at love, fidelity, and family, starring Debra Winger and Tracy Letts as a long-married and completely dispassionate husband and wife. Both are in the midst of serious affairs and are increasingly committed to their new partners. On the brink of officially calling it quits, a spark between them suddenly and unexpectedly reignites, leading them into an impulsive romance that forces them to navigate the hilarious complications of 'cheating' on their respective lovers. A mixture of humor and powerful emotion, the story is a uniquely honest take on modern marriage.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: The Lovers is buoyant and cheerfully flirty, though Jacobs never loses sight of the fact that loneliness that can strike both inside a marriage and outside it, and no human being is ever fully protected from suffering.
Fresh: We can read the character's history in Letts' face before we know the details. He's miserable, but like he's gotten used to misery. Misery is no big deal.
Fresh: With luck, by the end, you may hear what Jacobs does: the aching romantic movie imprisoned in each of us, desperate for release.
Rotten: Dreadfully dull romantic comedy in which a long-married couple (Debra Winger; Tracy Letts) feel renewed passion despite each being unfaithful. Aimless performances and an inert story make for a punishing hour and a half.
Glad to see Debra Winger again
That said, I was not convinced by the cast.
It's a movie about infidelity, betrayal, anger and new love. This dysfunctional (which, these days, means "normal") family has swept so many years of crap under the carpet that by the time the son is college aged, there is nothing left but confusion & anger.
So, it's kind of a Debbie (Winger) Downer movie for me.
Acting good... boring story
Can't believe I've sat through this whole film. It was only the acting that kept me interested. The story was a big bore
Interesting but not compelling
Its great seeing Debra Winger again but I the writing left me unconvinced that their relationship had ever had any depth to it. The score was horrible - like it belonged to another movie. It tried to give a lightness to an unsettling scenario but just irritated. But good performances all around.
