Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: "The Machine" works modestly well, but still wobbles trying to balance its "thinking man's sci-fi" aspirations against the need to placate less adventurous fans via standard action content.
Fresh: "The Machine" percolates with an elegantly palpable sense of wonder and danger.
Fresh: A classy slice of cerebral sci-fi with a literary-cinematic heritage stretching back through Blade Runner and Metropolis to Frankenstein.
Fresh: James overflogs the what-is-the-nature-of-being-dead horse, but directs with brio. Meanwhile, Lotz, with her child-like fragility and snappy kickboxing moves, is eminently watchable.
This movie reminded me a lot of the issues that Ghost in the Shell likes to deal with concerning man, machine and intelligence. Since this is live action and Ghost in the Shell is anime I guess Blade Runner might be a more obvious comparison. Blade Runner has more to do with action, though, and the action parts of this movie have more to do with character development.
Everything in the movie looks really good, and it is well acted.
a very interesting movie
The movie is very visionary. Caity Lotz is a very talented actress by far. The themes in this movie remind me of Blade Runner, Terminator series, and Ghost in the shell. And the music in this movie has the same feel. I recommend your rent or buy this movie if you enjoy any of these movies you will not be disappointed. I certainly was not. Pooneh Hajimohammadi is also a great actress in this movie. She sold to me the duality of a machine and was a very good complement to the film.
I gave this movie 3 stars because the basic theme was good; and, there are some nice action sequences. Caity Lotz's acting was superb...her character might make some guys want to acquire a "Cherry 2000." Pooneh Hajimohammadi was good, too. Wth that said, the movie theme wasn't all that original; however, some of it might be prophetic regarding cybernetic human beings replacing human beings. The pace was mostly kind of slow or predictable--even somewhat boring...I was tempted several times to turn it off. This movie could have been a blockbuster science fiction movie, but it seemed to be limited or constricted by the script, budget, and, cinemaphotography. If this movie had been put in the hands of some masters, then, it would have turned-out to be 150% better.
