Christian Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a factory lathe operator who has developed a serious case of insomnia. Lack of sleep has already started to wear down on his brain and his body. When he's involved in an accident at work, his co-workers turn against him. He starts to find strange notes in his apartment and see people that apparently aren't there. Jennifer Jason Leigh stars as call girl Stevie. The Machinist premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2004.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Mainly this is all Bale's show. He is strangely sympathetic, taking us right into Trevor's pain without any special pleading.
Fresh: The director Brad Anderson, working from a screenplay by Scott Kosar, wants to convey a state of mind, and he and Bale do that with disturbing effectiveness.
Fresh: Until now Bale's screen persona has been defined by a graceful athleticism; here his physicality is repellent, yet he carries the occasionally creaky plot of Scott Kosar's unsettling screenplay to a resonant finish.
Rotten: It begins dark and depressing, but ends up merely dull.
A FILM NOT TO BE FORGOTTEN!!
An amazing story, beautiful cinematography, and best of all, an incredible performance from Christian Bale (which should have been recognized by the Academy). Christian Bale is a dedicated actor, bringing his body weight to a dangerously low 95lbs. This film is well worth the price of $9.99!
Definetely one of the best thrillers to come out recently. You'll be guessing what's going on up until the very satisfying end. With fantastic cinematography and extremely creepy music to sum it all up. Awesome movie. It's fairly rewatchable too so its worth the buy for your pod
Not A Bad Movie... Just Nothing Special
After reading a few reviews off of itunes, and seeing that this movie was a 4 star rating overall, I figured the movie must be decent, so I decided to check it out. As mentioned by numerous other viewers the acting in this movie is exceptional. I have yet to see Christain Bale act poorly in a movie. It is the acting that might have been this movies saving grace from slipping into a below average rating because the story line is nothing special and is nothing original. Having said that, it isn't bad, if I could I would have given this movie a 31/2 star rating, because there is more to the plot than migh originally meat the eye. For people that claim that they predicted the ending, I find that very unlikely, simply because of the way the movie presents itself. Most people (myself included) probably saw the first twist coming, however the final twist is all but impossible. I am a fan of these kind of movies, movies such as Saw, Seven, and Fight Club, where the ending is simply unpredictable. Having seen many movies like this, I guess I found the first twist too obvious and the final twist unimportant. In the end this is a decent movie with great acting, I hesitate to recommend to anybody, however, fans of the genre will most likely appreciate it.
