About the Movie

First crush. First kiss. First steps in becoming a woman. At 14, Reese Witherspoon (Legally Blonde) made her big-screen debut as Dani in The Man In the Moon. Hailed by Roger Ebert as “a wonderful movie” and “a meticulously prepared masterpiece”, this poignant coming of age story about the highs and lows of first love is a must-see for moms and daughters, and for anyone who remembers the one summer – and the one person – who changed your life forever.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Gets an outstandingly natural performance out of Miss Witherspoon, who has no trouble carrying a lot of the film single-handedly. It falls to her to remind the audience that this story is at heart about a family, and she does. – Janet Maslin, New York Times, Apr 15, 2011

Fresh: Newcomer Witherspoon manages to strike exactly the right note as the tomboy on the verge of womanhood while Waterston works on several levels at once. – Variety Staff, Variety, Apr 15, 2011

Fresh: "The Man in the Moon" is a wonderful movie, but it is more than that, it is a victory of tone and mood. It is like a poem. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Apr 15, 2011

Fresh: The heart-warming tone steadily becomes overheated. – Derek Adams, Time Out, Apr 15, 2011

One of the best movies you can see.

This is Reese Witherspoon's first film and she is no less amazing. It is filled with first loves, new life, jealousy, tradgedy, and how important family is. It is for sure a case of the older the movie is the better. You will laugh, cry, and remember who is with you through the worst of times. A true southern tale, that will touch your heart forever. When all else fails, turn and talk to 'The Man In The Moon'.

What a movie!

Sam Waterston delivered such a great performance. They chose the best actor for this movie. Not to mention Reese Witherspoon's performance as well! This a touching love story of two teenagers about three years apart. With a mixed up love between the younger girl's older sister and then man she wants to call hers. I could not have bought a better movie!
