About the Movie

Two of French cinema’s biggest stars shine in this bittersweet drama about the unlikely friendship that develops between Claire (Catherine Frot), a talented but tightly wound midwife, and Béatrice (Catherine Deneuve), the estranged, free-spirited mistress of Claire’s late father. Though polar opposites in almost every way, the two come to rely on each other as they cope with the unusual circumstance that brought them together in this sharp character study from the César Award-winning director Martin Provost (Séraphine).

Fresh: "The Midwife" is an absorbing meander of a movie, prettily shot and a touch over-scored ... – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times, Jul 20, 2017

Fresh: Not a whole lot happens in The Midwife, but there's never a dull moment, thanks to the opposing yet equally stellar performances by the two Catherines in the lead. – Kristen Yoonsoo Kim, Village Voice, Jul 19, 2017

Fresh: A closely observed, intelligently imagined and realized presentation of contrasting personalities. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jul 27, 2017

Great Talents in Good Story

Just enjoy these two women. Real characters in a real life drama. Marvelous.
You cannot beat such a human tale filled with love, lost love, life, missed life, longing, needing and accepting the ups and downs of birth and death and troubles.
Deneuve in a remarkable role. A great actress better with each year.
This film is like a very tasty meal. Consume it.
