Plot Summary

Sweeping and visually resplendent, The Mission is a powerful action epic about a man of the sword (Robert DeNiro) and a man of the cloth (Jeremy Irons) who unite to shield a South American Indian tribe from brutal subjugation by 18th-century colonial empires. It reunites key talents behind The Killing Fields: co-producer David Puttnam, director Roland Joffe and cinematographer Chris Menges. Winner of the 1986 Cannes Film Festival Best Picture Award, the film earned seven Academy Award nominations (including Best Picture) and won a Best Cinematography Oscar. Robert Bolt's thoughtful screenplay and Ennio Morricone's rich score won Golden Globe Awards. The Mission is screen storytelling that weaves a haunting spell.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: A singularly lumpy sort of movie. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Sep 10, 2014

Fresh: "The Mission" effectively dramatizes yet another chapter in the ruthless European conquest of the Americas. It'll make you hate the whole of western civilization with every fiber of your being. – Rita Kempley, Washington Post, Sep 10, 2014

Fresh: The film looks superb from start to finish, the acting is almost universally top notch ... and Morricone's score is a fine accompaniment to Joffe's passionate, heartfelt vision. – Film4, Sep 10, 2014

Astounding

This is my favorite movie of all time. The plot is one based off of actual history, and it contains powerful images as well as an absolutely breathtaking score by Ennio Morricone. I don't know why it's rated PG, it should be R, but all its images are necessary. If you don't buy this movie, at least rent it, so you can see why the average rating is 5 stars. I would give it more if I could.

Truly changes you

This reallly is an extraordinary film. Robert DeNiro and Jeremy Irons are great, the story and dialogue are solid, and Ennio Morricone's score is just plain beautiful. I don't think this needs an Oscar to prove how good a film it was.

Stunning

Especially in these troubled times, this movie is more then great acting, spectacular cinematography, it expresses a message for the ages. I'm so glad to find this in iTunes
