Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Bertino, who also wrote the undercooked script, sets the scene effectively, using his leads to give the story a sense of normalcy that he dismantles trick by genre trick. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Nov 10, 2016

Fresh: A simple but skillfully told shocker. – Clark Collis, Entertainment Weekly, Nov 10, 2016

Fresh: An admirably lean-and-mean execution of an elemental horror story. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Nov 11, 2016

Rotten: The Monster offers solid performances and a real-world subtext. But those virtues aren't enough to keep the movie from getting stalled in some big bad woods, miles short of profundity. – Mark Jenkins, NPR, Nov 10, 2016

Awesome

Great horror movie, Great acting, monster does not disappoint, and movie has rewatch value. ⭐️5 out of 5⭐️ stars, A must see!

Ugh...

I wanted to like this movie so much. The premise is right up my alley! BUT man o man they tried way to hard to make the mother/daughter subplot dramatically important during what should of been just a "man vs nightmare scenario" film that any fan of the classic Stephen Kings: Cujo, would jump at. So much so that is was annoying and tedious and whiny. It slowed it down and it was just eyerolling.

On the positve, the production value and cinematography were great! And Zoe Kazan is nice to look at!

Outstanding!

Not your typical horror movie- and at times you wonder who the real monster is- but this movie is heartbreaking and frightening at given times.
Well written and well acted.
I was brought to tears and terrified at the same time.
Great movie!
