Plot Summary

It was the cruelest of times. Under Herod's torturous reign, families struggled to survive and yet, in the midst of utter turmoil, a young woman's faith is put to the test. Join Mary (Keisha Castle-Hughes) and Joseph (Oscar Isaac) on an incredible journey of hope and discovery. Epic in its scope, yet intimate in it's portrayal of this historical family, this "wonderful film" (Bill Zwecker, Chicago Sun Times) is "a family feature that will be cherished for years to come!" (Greg Russell, WMYD-TV, Detroit).

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It's not exactly the dullest story ever told, but it's certainly not the greatest. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Sep 1, 2007

Fresh: I have to hand it to Hardwicke: I was a lot less bored by The Nativity Story than I feared I'd be. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Of course there is nothing inherently wrong with preaching to the converted -- secular Hollywood does it all the time. But I confess I wish the movie had some of the passion of The Passion of the Christ. – Tom Charity, CNN.com, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Dull and inert. – Jack Mathews, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

first ethnically correct christmas story I have seen

Although the ratings from rotten tomatoes gives it such a low rating, it leads me to believe they rated it on terms of their religious bias (anti religion). I have to say this is the first movie about the Christmas story that uses actors that are ethnically correct, with middle eastern ethnicity and accents rather than the same old white portrayal of Jesus' upbringing. It is a masterful presentation of the dilemma that Mary would have gone through in her society and Joseph's courageous response to the situation. I think there is much to see from both a Christian as well as a non believer standpoint as to how they endured and overcame the situation. It is too bad that the anti religion bias of the ratings seems to miss these points, but I am not surprised at their lack of "open minded" analysis that they usually accuse Christians of since they usually lack critical thinking skills. : )

great Christmas movie

this is the best nativity movie ever. memorable sence is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ who died for the sins of the world and of course rose on the third day. This movie isn't as memorable and successful as Mel Gibson's the Passion of the Christ, bbut a good prequel to it.

Great movie.

This is a beautiful movie. The scene with the wisemen coming into the stable & seeing Jesus was breathtaking. Would recommend to anyone. Rotten tomatoes reviews makes me wonder if they actually watched this movie or if they are just so hard hearted they don't get the glory of the story.
