Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: A special kind of awful. I'd talk about the acting, but I never saw any; it's all posing. Director Refn seems to saying that the L.A. beauty business is superficial and needs to be avoided. Ditto this movie.
Fresh: The mesmeric pull of The Neon Demon cannot be denied. It lures you in for the kill.
Rotten: Stylish and creepy, but also simplistic and hollow. As an indictment of the beauty industry, it's only skin-deep.
Fresh: A bold visionary artist, Refn seems able to revel in the culture of instant gratification while also subjecting it to critique.
What did you expect?
Nicolas Winding Refn made another surreal film that pushes cinematic vocabulary. It's weird, it's awesome, it's weirdly awesome. The writing and acting work together to create and maintain a certain emotional distance; with the magnificent soundtrack enhancing the unease. Not for everyone; but what did you expect?
A Cinematographic And Style-Studded Masterpiece
Nicholas Winding Refn has done it again. He has made yet another film that is both stylish and full of meaning and symbolism. At its core, this movie is a different perspective of the modeling business of Los Angeles, dipped it neon colored paint and diamonds. This movie is one of the most inventive, visually stunning movies I have ever seen. If anything, you should watch it for the stunning visuals and mesmerizing soundtrack by Cliff Martinez. This movie really makes you think about how beauty can destroy a sweet, innocent young girl trying to make it big in Hollywood with dreams of being a supermodel. You do not want to miss this movie and I highly recommend watching it.
A Defining Nicolas WInding Refn Experience
I was lucky enough to catch this movie during the one week it was in theaters. And I am a fan. Now, granted, I am a huge fan of NWR. I even liked Only God Forgives (2013). But nevertheless, this is a great movie. If you're into artsy, slow movies where it's less about the plot and storyline and more about the experience, you're going to love this. Before watching this movie, it is important to understand that this is absolutely NOT A HORROR MOVIE. If that's what you're expecting, you will be terribly disappointed and probably hate this movie. This is an incrediby dark drama with elements of horror sprinkled in. And it's a hell of a ride.
