About the Movie
The Other Side of Immigration asks why so many Mexicans come to the U.S. and what happens to the families and communities they leave behind. Through an approach that is both subtle and thought-provoking, filmmaker Roy Germano provides a perspective on undocumented immigration rarely witnessed by American eyes, challenging audiences to imagine more creative and effective solutions to the problem.
From their eyes.
A wonderful humanizing perspective on the immigration issue. Allows you to understand the struggles from the eyes and hearts of those whom many just see as "illegals".
The Other SIde of Immigration
I was fortunate enough to see this film with my graduate class when it came through our town. We had the added pleasure of hearing Roy Hermano speak and answer heated questions after the film. This documentary takes the audience through recent history as it examines how America and Mexico have come to be in our current situation of illegal immigration, an exploited work force, sky-high fences, and people dying in the desert trying to get to "The Promised Land". The issues surrounding immigration and border-crossing are complex and are fraught with politics and financial influence, yet Hermano's film is obviously well researched, thorough, and clearly portrayed. He looks carefully and respectfully at this controversial topic, while educating viewers about possible solutions. I highly recommend this film. I would even go as far as saying that I think it should be required material for all high school students, as it is educational, deeply compelling, and covers a topic that must be addressed.
Another window to see immigration
The Other Side of Immigration is a very insightful documentary that invites the viewer to contemplate immigration from a perspective that until now has not been seldom presented. The stories allow us to think outside of the current domestic-US-only view of immigration, and open a window from which we can learn about who is at the other side of the fence, why they are coming, and consider what is our human, personal, communal, national, and global responsibility in the issue of immigration. This documentary will expand your knowledge and views on immigration issues in a way that you do not expect!
