About the Movie
Based on S.E. Hinton's best-selling classic and directed by Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner and Emmy-nominee Francis Ford Coppola ("The Godfather" trilogy, "Bram Stoker's Dracula"), this story focuses on the class struggles between two groups of Oklahoma teenagers during the 1960s. Starring some of today's hottest boxoffice stars -- Academy Award-nominee and Golden Globe-winner Tom Cruise ("War of the Worlds," "The Last Samurai"), Academy Award, Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Diane Lane ("Must Love Dogs," "Unfaithful"), Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Matt Dillon ("Crash," "There's Something About Mary"), Emmy and Golden Globe-nominee Rob Lowe (TV's "The West Wing"), Golden Globe-nominee Patrick Swayze ("Ghost," "Dirty Dancing"), Ralph Macchio ("The Karate Kid") and Emilio Estevez ("Young Guns" 1 & 2, "Stakeout"). Gene Siskel of The Chicago Tribune said, "***l/2 -- A film about teenage years that ranks in its own lyrical way with 'A Rebel Without a Cause' and 'American Graffiti'."

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: [Coppola's] revisions to the film, which include a new, improved soundtrack, invest it with grandeur worthy of both its characters and his own ambitions.
Rotten: It's as if someone had handed Verdi a copy of ''The Hardy Boys Attend a Rumble'' and, holding a gun to the poor man's head, forced him to use it as a libretto.
Fresh: Francis Coppola's revision of his 1983 film of S.E. Hinton's best seller The Outsiders is funny, touching and revelatory.
Fresh: One of the most overtly aesthetic, art-for-art's-sake films in Hollywood's history, a faux-naif Pre-Raphaelite mural in which angels with dirty faces but immaculately pure hearts burn with a hard, gemlike flame before being snuffed out in their prime.
I absolutely love this movie and the book. At sixteen, S.E. Hinton created a book that everyone can relate. When I first picked up the book, I thought it was going to be stupid and boring. But after the first page, Hinton had me hooked. It shows how people are catergorized and instantly hated because of their background. It's such as moving nook and movie and I adore it.
one of the most epic movies of the 1980's
