In 1776 South Carolina, widower and legendary war hero Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) finds himself thrust into the midst of the American Revolutionary War as he helplessly watches his family torn apart by the savage forces of the British Redcoats. Unable to remain silent, he recruits a band of reluctant volunteers, including his idealistic patriot son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), to take up arms against the British. Fighting to protect his family's freedom and his country's independence, Martin discovers the pain of betrayal, the redemption of revenge and the passion of love.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Deserves a salute as the first Hollywood epic about the American Revolution to successfully blend ferocity and feeling.
Fresh: It wisely focuses upon common folk rather than prominent figures.
Fresh: A grand yarn with a sense of the weight of history and an awareness that the winners are often those who have lost the most.
Rotten: A movie of cornball sentiment, humorously anachronistic dialogue, and expensive Colonial Williamsburg sets.
There are films that you watch because you want to get something out of them, a sense of time not wasted, a positive message, an enduring story that you want to revisit again and again. Then there are films that you watch simply for the action, because you get thrill out of them, because their cool. THE PATRIOT is a film that tries darn hard to meet both needs, and it succeeds. Although THE PATRIOT doesn't dig as deep for an inspiring message as Mel Gibson's other film WE WERE SOLDIERS, it doesn't have to be. It is a whole new film. WE WERE SOLDIERS works as a deeply inspiring film that you wouldn't want to watch more than a few times simply because it's too powerful and brutal. THE PATRIOT is more watchable and perhaps that is what makes it so great. Although Benjamin Martin begins his journey in retribution for his family, he ends up fighting for his country for higher causes. Like GLADIATOR and SHENANDOA the loving father has some or all of his family taken from him and vows revenge on those who, "done him wrong." Unlike GLADIATOR, the hero eventually overcomes his urge for revenge and ends up fighting for justice rather than self gratification. Although THE PATRIOT is rated R, the violence is not as often or graphic as expected. True, it is brutal and does earn it's rating, but just barely. In fact, THE PATRIOT plays out well as an action film that one would want to see again and again, unlike WE WERE SOLDIERS which is outstandingly great, but due to the violence would not be healthy in heavy doses. Calling it fun would be an overstatement, but it is very entertaining. In short, THE PATRIOT is inspiring, entertaining, heart wrenching, more than a little cliched, and overall patrioticly great. And in my book, it makes the perfect Independence Day film to watch year after year. CONTENT: Much brutal and heavy (though relitively non-graphic) Revolutionary War time violence including bloody gunshot wounds, bayonet stabbings, cannonball decapitations, brief glimpse of an amputation, the implied slaughter of many civillians, and a scene where several british soldiers are massacred with a hatchet; some minor swearing and profanity; some minor innuendo and cleavage barring tops; the burning of a church with innocent people trapped inside. WHO: Older Teens/Young Adults and older.

For movie-goers looking for absolute historical accuracy, turn back now and look elsewhere for your facts. However, for those looking for an entertaining film set during the Revolutionary War, I think you will thoroughly enjoy this movie as much as I have. The visuals are marvelous and the acting is fantastic, leaving very few problems to be found.
