Compelling, but wrong
It is a compelling argument, but it is based on an incomplete understanding and is largely incorrect.
Yes, the body needs protein and there are too many simple carbohydrates in most people's diets. It got that much right. However, while excess carbohydrates lead to weight gain and other problems, by far the greatest problem in the modern diet is acidity.
Acidic foods must be neutralized with a base. Initially, this is done by using the sodium phosphate (not to be confused with sodium chloride) that is found in the lining of the digestive system. However, once the sodium phosphate is depleted the body then uses the calcium from bones as the base to neutralize the acid. So the acidity first leads to acid indigestion, then to gastroesophogeal reflux disease (GERD) as our bodies run out of sodium phosphate. Then, as the acid breaks down our bones to be neutralized by their calcium we develop arthritis as the calcium deposits in our joints, and heart disease and high blood pressure as the calcium collects in our arteries, and osteoporosis as the bones become depleted of calcium.
The incredibly important fact that was completely overlooked by this documentary is that animal protein (meat) is every bit as acidic as white flour and white sugar and will cause all of the same diseases. Fresh fruits and vegetables are great sources of sodium phosphate to help neutralize the acid.
A truly healthy diet is one in which we eat meat sparingly and eat lots of fresh vegetables and some fruits, some nuts and seeds everyday, and one cup of non-hybridized whole grains and/or legumes each day. All of which should be varied frequently in order to get balanced nutrition. This, along with daily exercise and a forgiving temperament, are the secrets to health and longevity.
Another very important thing that was completely overlooked in this documentary was the very short life expectancy of humanoids during the eons of time that the diet was largely based on meat. Life expectancy increased dramatically in each society as their diets grew to include a wider variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and even whole grains, and then health begins to decline as these foods are replaced with highly processed convenience foods.
Uh no thanks
I was really hoping to learn something from this documentary, but I really feel like I just wasted $3.99. "The perfect human diet" is none other than the paleo diet, but the documentary doesn't seem to ever really come out and say that nor does it really give any idea about what that paleo diet is except, I guess, that it is to eat a bunch of meat. I can see the point of the paleo movement but just like all the other fad diets that come and go, it fails to consider the adaptability of the human organism. For example, many northern Europeans evolved the ability to digest milk as adults within the last 10,000 years, a fact ignored by this documentary. Long story short, this doc is long on personal diatribe (are you going to trust a guy that seems to have tried every fad diet there is?) and short on real information. If you want to know more about the paleo diet, there are certainly better sources.

First review ever written on iTunes but had to do it for this incredible documentary that a group of committed people spent years to bring to me tonight. In short, I have been working in Europe the past four years and began to eat more meat, full fat foods, less carbs, virtually no processed foods, and many fruits, nuts and veggies. I never tried to diet in Europe but suddenly I began losing weight, my heartburn went away, and my allergies too (stopped all medication for these). Then I would come back to the US for a couple weeks and the weight would begin piling on in as little as two weeks and my heartburn returned as well. Watching this movie tonight it hit me like a ton of bricks that the processed crap that passes for food in most of our grocery stores is the culprit as well as the overemphasis (including government recommendations/guidelines) on wheat, grains and dairy….which are much more of my diet in the US than oversees. In fact, I eat more meat, full fat foods in my diet in Europe BUT way less processed grains, wheat, and carbs. My soy intake in the US is four times that in Europe!!! I am so grateful for this film and what it is bringing to light. I now know what was causing my improved health and weight overseas and what I am up against in the Country I love every time I enter a grocery store. I cannot recommend this film enough. I hope it spreads like wildfire.
