About the Movie

A bored little boy thinks everything is a waste of time until he drives through a mysterious turnpike tollbooth in a toy car. His customary bored attitude lands him in the doldrums, but he is rescued by a magical dog and together the pair embark on a journey through the Kingdom of Wisdom. Musical mix of live action and animation starring Butch Patrick (TV's "The Munsters") and featuring the vocal talents of Mel Blanc. Based on the popular children's book by Norton Juster.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The youthful viewer and his parents should overlook Phantom Tollbooth's flaws and concentrate on the film's underlying moral. – Stefan Kanfer, TIME Magazine, Feb 7, 2018

Fresh: More would have been acheived without the inclusion of the sappy pop songs, but the film still has infinitely more savvy than most of the Disney cartoons of the period. – Film4, Aug 4, 2014

Great film adaptation of an amazing book!

I've been waiting to find this in non-VHS format for _ages_. This movie needs to be shown to every child that has ever said "I'm bored."

The movie is a great mix of animation and live action, amazingly done for a 40-year old piece of work. The iTunes plot summary wraps things up pretty well, but there is so much more to this movie, emphasizing the importance and excitement of living life and showing that learning, indeed, is fun. Sure, 1970 is a bit out of date for today's kids, and the 1961 book is even further back, still, but the moral of the story is still an important one.

Spend the 3 bucks and hour and a half to rent and watch this movie! It's worth every penny, and every goofy second!

Great Movie

This was a movie that was a highlight of my childhood. For our 3rd grade school play we acted out scenes dealing with the Dodecahedron and we learned about basic math concepts from this movie. And I read the book at least three times a kid. Great book and great movie!!!

An All-Time Favorite

I liked this movie when I was a kid and I STIL love it as an adult. SO happy they added it to the collection.
