About the Movie
Ever since Hopper (Johnny Simmons) was a child, he has dreamed of becoming a major league pitcher. Relentlessly pushed by his abusive father (Academy Award Nominee Ethan Hawke), he’s on the verge of becoming one of the game’s most promising players when he unexpectedly breaks down on the mound. Now Hopper’s only hope lies with an unorthodox sports therapist (Academy Award Nominee Paul Giamatti) who urges him to let go of the past so he can find success on the field.

Rotten: "The Phenom" is a baseball movie with virtually no baseball, which would be fine if the thing it relied on instead - lots and lots of talking - exhibited zest and originality. It doesn't.
Fresh: An unusual and affecting baseball drama where nearly all the action is internal.
Fresh: It's Hawke who gives the film its dramatic urgency.
Fresh: The Phenom unfolds as a series of quiet, incisive conversations that showcase subtle, insightful performances.
LOL these reviews are hilarious. "too slow" "too boring" "needs more explosions and chicks bro!" "where's my wifebeater" Listen if you wait in line for the latest Vin Diesel movie then this obviously isn't for you. BUT if you enjoy award worthy acting and storytelling that doesn't rely on ostentatious CGI then you should definitely watch this. It's more Good Will Hunting than Major League. c'mon 'MURICA.

It's not about baseball. It's about him and a shrink.
Bravo but Too close to home...
I grew up in a similar environment with similar pressures and expectations. It was all too familar and impactful. A great look into the unglamarous side of being athlete not often done in cinema.
