Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Its three stories are so loosely connected, its themes so scattered -- morality, justice, fate, fatherhood -- that it never manages to make a point. – Rafer Guzman, Newsday, Apr 11, 2013

Fresh: This naturalistic drama is ambitious to the point of being unwieldy... But once the story has advanced from one generation to the next and its thematic sweep has become apparent, these flaws seem much more tolerable. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Apr 12, 2013

Fresh: This is a story about legacy, the sins of the father, the restlessness in our souls. It's powerful, it's bold, it hits you hard. – Steven Rea, Philadelphia Inquirer, Apr 11, 2013

Fresh: "Pines" is hardy stuff, but it's at its toughest when Gosling's on screen. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Apr 12, 2013

One of 2013's Bests

This movie really blew me away. I didn't know too much about it when I bought my ticket at the theater, but I was pulled in immediately within the first few scenes. It's hard for a drama to give me chills and make me feel so attached to the characters, but this one nailed it. I really like how the movie is divided into three sections; each one takes place in the same town, but with (kinda) different stories that add on the the overall plot. The directing, acting, and story are all brilliant and worth recognition. If you're like me who thought this movie would be boring based on the trailer, you'll be pleasantly surprised; I was entertained from the very first scene to the very last scene, and I didn't want it to be over because I was so into it. This is definitely one of the best movies I've seen all year.

The Place Beyond the Pines is a beautiful, ambitious, & very unique film. This film shows the dark side of family life & relationships between father and son. Its basically about a motercycle stuntman (Gosling) who finds out that he has a son and wants to be in his sons life & provide support for him. Financially he can't so he teams up with a friend and they rob banks. For a while they actually get away with it until a wealthy cop (Cooper) gets involved and then all hell breaks loose. What I really like about this movie is how the story is told. It's like a three part saga that spends about 45 min on each father seeing their points of views. Then ending with their sons as teenagers showing how their fathers have influnced their lives. This is very unique filmmaking but at times it's a bit confusing. Especially towards the end of the film I wasn't sure if this movie was suppose to have a deeper meaning to what was going on. Maybe it was history repeating itself or maybe is showing how far a father will go to protect his family. Or maybe both. I guess you'll have to decide for yourself. Either way this is a great movie that needs to be seen its emotional and it's got great performances esp. Ryan Gosling. I highly recommend seeing it!!!

One of the best this year
