Return to a time when men were men and swamps were swamps. Fire swamps, that is. Full of quicksand and Rodents of Unusual Size. Lagoons were inhabited by shrieking eels. And the most beautiful woman in the world was named…Buttercup? Well, it's a bent fairy tale. Complete with all the fencing, fighting, chases, escapes, and silly accents you'd expect. Plus one of two things only Rob Reiner (director of "Misery", "When Harry Met Sally...") could dream up. Like Inigo Montoya, who has dreamt his whole life of finding the six finger man who killed his father. Blonde Buttercup loves Westley, a poor stable boy. But when he's captured by pirates, she's chosen by evil Prince Humperdinck to be his princess bride. Along the way, she gets kidnapped, he gets killed. But it all ends up okay.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: This material might easily have lent itself to broad parody or become too cute for its own good. But Mr. Reiner presents it as a bedtime story, pure and simple.
Fresh: As you watch this enchanting fantasy, feel free to be thrilled or to giggle, as you wish.
Fresh: Heroic fantasies, we often feel, should be lighter than air, hot as dragon fire, fast as a sword in sunlight. And that's mostly what we get from the delightful The Princess Bride -- along with some bracing humor and foolery.
Fresh: The film works well enough, providing its fair share of laughs and thrills, and in technical terms it is by far Reiner`s most professional job of direction.
On my list of best movies ever!
I remember I saw this movie for the first time I was about 11, and I was skeptical. I had seen the cover at the movie store and thought it was just going to be some historical, fictional movie. So when my parents said we just "had" to rent it and that it was really funny, I scarcely believed them. This is one of the times in my life when I was not only proven wrong, but was extremely glad I was. Don't be fooled by the romantic cover in the clouds--this movie is definitely romantic, but is hilarious beyond the connotation of the cover. Most of the people I know who quote this movie are guys, and it's the favorite movie of two of our pastors at church (no lie!). It's fabulous, and to quote one of the first lines of the movie, it's got "Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles..." You won't be disappointed.
Must be one of the best movies ever!
I don't know anyone who's ever seen this film who cannot quote some part of it: Whether it's "Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while." "There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world, t'would be a pitty to dammage yours." or the famous, albeit often misquoted, "Hallo, my name is Indigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die!" This is a movie you must watch more than once. I highly recommend purchasing this movie.
"Fencing, fighting, torture...true love, miracles!"
This has always been my favorite movie. Ever since I saw it with my sister, I was obsessed with it. I still watch it at least once a month. And like all great movies, this was done with the lowest of low budgets, but mangaged to overcome it with pure genius. Each character stands out, and each line resonates in your ears until you can't help but pause it because it can't hear the rest of the amazing lines over your own laughing. This isn't just a comedy though, if that's what you're thinking. Even though I laugh harder and harder every time I watch this, it has, as the grandfather in the movie so eloquently puts it, "Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles!" From my experience, unfortunately, I have come to reason that it is a "hate-it-or-love-it" movie. Fortunately, in my mind, that makes it worth trying out.
