About the Movie
Jean Reno, Gary Oldman, Natalie Portman and Danny Aiello star in Leon: The Professional, a go-for-broke thriller about a professional assassin whose work becomes dangerously personal. Calling himself a "cleaner", the mysterious Leon (Reno) is New York's top hitman. When his next-door neighbors are murdered, Leon becomes the unwilling guardian of the family's sole survivor - 12-year-old Mathilda (Natalie Portman), but Mathilda doesn't just want protection; she wants revenge. Training her in the deadly tricks of his trade, Leon helps her track the psychotic agent (Oldman) who murdered her family.

Rotten: The Professional is much too sentimental to sound shockingly amoral in the least. Even in a finale of extravagant violence, it manages to be maudlin.
Fresh: Mathilda is like no New York City girl-child I've ever seen riding the subway. And I couldn't take my eyes off her.
Fresh: Leave it to french writer-director Luc Besson (La Femme Nikita) to put a kinky twist on Orphan Annie and Daddy Warbucks.
Fresh: This is a Cuisinart of a movie, mixing familiar yet disparate ingredients, making something odd, possibly distasteful, undeniably arresting out of them.

This is one of the most outstanding films ever released. The acting, dialogue and undertones are amazing. I was gifted this film when it was ffirst released and have watched it many times and still find something to amaze me. Luc Besson is outstanding as is Gary Oldman however Natallie Portman will blow you away. The smoking scene on the stairs is excellent. Personally, I only ever watch films for pure entertainment and not in depth analysis yet this one woke me up to more than just losing 2 hours of my time. Enjoy
..go watch the original, the relationship between Leon and Matilda is explored more. Just a side note, the character and the strongest weapon in the game, Resident Evil 4, go by the same name.
The reviews here are surprising. This film has a cult following, and is on a par with some of the greatest Westerns ever made (no, it is not a Western - but the hero concept is the same), including anyone who likes the Clint Eastwood genre. Top-quality acting by all involved and excellent directing. A steller performance by what might have been Natalie Portman's first role. Perhaps Luc Besson's finest work. I can assure you will not be disapointed.
