About the Movie

A new epic fantasy set in China's mythical past, "The Promise" is a visually stunning tale of passion that unfolds against a backdrop of war as a beautiful and mysterious princess becomes the object of affection for three very different men - a powerful Duke, a brave general and a lowly slave. As passions spark and egos clash, lives will be ruined and lovers spurned and no one will ever be the same.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Oddly, The Promise -- which takes place hundreds, even thousands, of years ago, when art directors ruled the earth -- is flagrantly otherworldly but in a way that somehow weighs the picture down. – Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Laden with a plot that could generously be called silly or, less forgivingly, stupid, it never achieves lift-off despite numerous scenes of warriors doing battle in midair. – Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: It suggests that talented Chinese directors are being led astray by the seductions of CGI and wirework fantasies. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: A princess with a curse, a case of mistaken identity and some of the worst special effects in a film by a world-class director. – John Anderson, Newsday, Jun 24, 2010

Good

Good movie, but I will wait HD. Plus, I'd not say it worth $15...

Great film but...

Where the hell is the Mandarin language version?! I paid thinking it was just like other foreign films but nope- english version only. Are you freakin kidding me?! Watching this film dubbed in English kills the film!

English dubbed?!

What the heck. I remembered watching this movie as a child and was looking forward to watching it again until I realized it is not in Mandarin. Booooooo!
