Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Trueba is having so much fun revisiting characters from 1998's "The Girl of Your Dreams" that he's forgotten how to build a story out of multiple strands and make it all work. – Jay Weissberg, Variety, Feb 13, 2017

Rotten: Though "The Queen of Spain" looks terrific and features a warm, glamorous performance by Penelope Cruz, that promise is fulfilled only fitfully in this valentine to moviemaking. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Aug 17, 2017

Rotten: Queen is the sort of project which marketing teams like to talk about as "classic" while secretly knowing that it's just old-fashioned. – Jonathan Holland, Hollywood Reporter, Aug 15, 2017

Rotten: The Queen may be a treat for those familiar with Dreams, but this uneven film glosses over too much - and runs too long. – Tatiana Craine, Village Voice, Aug 15, 2017

Once again the film industry lionizes the perpetrators of genocide and rape. Not nearly as "successful" as the Communists in Russia who genocided 62 million, Communists in Spain (many of whom were Americans) murdered "only" a half-million and raped "only" hundreds of nuns. Yet the Communists are portrayed sympathetically in this farce. This really is a two-for-one for the anti-Catholics. They insult Catholic Queen Isabella who routed the Muslims from Spain AND they insult the great Catholic anti-Communist Franco. I wasted 99¢ hoping for an honest picture. So stereotypical!

A total waste of everything

Dumb, not funny and incredibly dull. I couldn't even get through half of it. A first rate cast in a fith rate film!
