Rotten: The Scorpion King may look like a movie, but it feels like a food fight.
Rotten: It's for moviegoers who like their pizzas with extra cheese.
Fresh: One of those movies that catches you up in something bigger than yourself, namely, an archetypal desire to enjoy good trash every now and then.
Fresh: Like every other action movie, it's designed for a 14-year-old boy's mentality, but it's enjoyable enough to turn most people into 14-year-old boys.
This may be because I was blinded by The Rock's pecs or what, but this movie isn't bad. While it doesn't stand up to The Mummy or The Mummy 2 and probably not the new one either, this is in no way a bad movie. Yes, the historical facts are twisted at best, but this isn't a historical documentary flick. It's an action and adventure movie and there's plenty of that, no doubt
By no stretch of the imagination is the storyline intricate nor the acting impeccable. Some dialog is delivered as if the director had just given them the line and asked the actor to repeat it back, but when I watch a movie starring The Rock called "The Scorpion King", I'm not expecting Hamlet - I'm expecting something along the lines of Conan or Red Sonja and that's what I got. Fairly formulaic fantasy adventure - but solidly executed as a fun film. (Poor Michael Clarke Duncan though - great actor whose character is too one-dimensional to really let him shine) Entertaining adventure and except for the violence (which is relatively goreless especially by today's standards) very kid friendly as well. The sexual overtones of potentially graphically erotic scenes are played down: you'll understand it, and there's some eye candy - Kelly Hu is stunning - but you probably won't feel the need to cover kiddo's eyes.
A great movie! It has an excellent storyline. Lots of sword fighting action. It doesn't have the same ambience as the first two Mummy movies, and maybe the third one, but the intensity of the fighting makes up for it. The use of rock music instead of classical gives it a cool, hard-core feel. Overall, I like it!
