About the Movie

Ricardo Darín stars as Benjamín, a former criminal court employee who wants to write a novel about an Argentine case from the 1970s where a woman was raped and murdered. He confides his intentions to a judge with whom he's been secretly smitten for years, Irene (Soledad Villamil), but she expresses reservations about the idea, for reasons that eventually become apparent. Meanwhile, flashbacks set up the central story, unfolding in 1970s Argentina. In that narrative, Argentina has fallen under the control of a military junta and a fair trial has become an increasingly uncommon event in that nation's courts. A woman is found raped and murdered while her husband was at work, and two immigrant workers are essentially forced into confessing to the crime. Benjamín then teams up with his colleague and friend, the lush Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella), and the two go about identifying and tagging the perpetrator of the original crime. Subtle detail in a photograph alerts Benjamin to the possibility that a man named Gómez (Javier Godino) may have been the real culprit, but finding Gómez and obtaining conclusive evidence against him is no simple task. Moreover, as Benjamín and Pablo struggle to have the case reopened, they also find that bureaucracy and power in Argentine government have made this close to impossible.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Romantic obsession at its two extremes is explored with sympathy and intelligence in the thriller The Secret in Their Eyes... – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, Aug 23, 2010

Fresh: Campanella approaches the material with a classic hand -- no quick cuts, special effects or gimmicks here. This is a flesh-and-blood movie, and both Darin and Villamil bring earthy presence to the story. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The entire film is stocked with images that reflect a character and story in flux. – Chris Vognar, Dallas Morning News, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: The Secret in Their Eyes ... is an enjoyable procedural in its own right. Campanella's film is the Argentine equivalent of Gone Baby Gone, with a touch of Atonement thrown in for good measure. – Simon Miraudo, Quickflix, Oct 21, 2014

Let us rent please!!!

I want to rent this movie!!!!

Great Movie.

I saw this movie for the first time last Sunday, I heard of it because of my Brother-in-Law, and we decided to watch it Sunday, I must say I love it, I recommend it to the viewers who like suspense, my mind was working the whole time during the movie, waiting for the end anxious. I simply love the story and the end. GREAT MOVIE!!!

I just watched what is now one of my favorite movies.

This is the first iTunes review I have written. Minutes ago I finished viewing this excellent film. It is now on my list of all-time favorites. It succeeds in many ways: the cinematography is beautifully done; interesting characters that are well-portrayed; a story that keeps you engaged from beginning until the satisfying end. It was the Academy Award winner for best foreign film for 2009. It is right up there with Lives of Others the winner for 2006.
