Plot Summary

2010 Academy Award Nominee, Best Animated Feature. Magic, fantasy, and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in a sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. In a remote medieval outpost of Ireland, young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying a book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the falry Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The Secret of Kells is a magical adventure unlike anything we've seen on screen before. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: A glorious throwback to the more stylized, painterly work of decades past, the kind of vividly colored, fanciful pictorials that are usually confined to the small-scale realm of animated shorts. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The soul of the film lies in its ravishing colors, and in exuberantly stylized images that pay homage to Celtic culture and design, together with techniques and motifs that evoke Matisse, Miyazaki and the minimalist cartoons of UPA. – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: If filmgoers ultimately feel bogged down in its densely layered fable and allegory, it's a spectacular thicket to get lost in. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jul 7, 2010

This movie is so beautiful! Definitely gave me my money's worth. I highly recommend it for ANYONE who enjoys fantasy, mythology, and especially art.

Beautiful and one of a kind..

I saw it at theater and it was breath taking.. the celtic religious art mixed with animation and beautiful music and mysterious story was impeccably put together, one of a kind creation and definitely worth to own.

Visually brilliant. Storywise remains somewhat dry.

The art direction in this film is nothing short of brilliant. I did however find myself having a hard time caring about the story. Like a lot of films I found that it had a lot to give in the realm aesthetic appeal, but if all the dialog was removed I feel I would of had the same experience. I think I would have liked it better as a short film than a full length feature. Maybe I was expecting too much.
