Disillusioned and exhausted after a decade of battling in the Crusades, a knight (Max von Sydow) encounters Death on a desolate beach and challenges him to a fateful game of chess. Much studied, imitated, even parodied, but never outdone, Bergman’s stunning allegory of man’s search for meaning, The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet), was one of the benchmark foreign imports of America’s 1950s art-house heyday, pushing cinema’s boundaries and ushering in a new era of moviegoing.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Essentially intellectual, yet emotionally stimulating, too, it is as tough -- and rewarding -- a screen challenge as the moviegoer has had to face this year.
Fresh: Film has superior technical narrative, impressive lensing and thesping.
Fresh: Bergman's visually striking medieval morality play [was] the work that gained him an international reputation.
Fresh: This is an uncompromising film, regarding good and evil with the same simplicity and faith as its hero.
The Seventh Seal
This was a very interesting older film. The story was very simple, but the characters and story line were rich in their complexities. I also liked how the film developed the opposing views of the major actors. This was a period piece in its natural form. It was straight forward in its story telling. The acting was well done.
One of the three best movies ever made
It may be the best movie ever made.
If I had one film left to watch before I died, it would be this one. Its manner of showing impending death is dramatic and suspenseful more than any other movie I've seen. Though if you're a teenager looking for a fast paced action flick, this isn't the movie for you.
