Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The movie has all the coherence of a bad acid flashback. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 16, 2010

Rotten: Despite similarities as a vigilante creature of the night, however, the Shadow -- a character that enjoyed its greatest success in radio after being created in pulp novels -- lacks the visceral appeal of Batman and won't strike the same chord. – Brian Lowry, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Most of the time, you won't be chuckling, so much as contemplating the emptiness that lies in the brains of all too many production executives. – Desson Thomson, Washington Post, Nov 18, 2002

Rotten: Overproduced but underwhelming monolith. – Rita Kempley, Washington Post, Nov 18, 2002

The Shadow

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? THE SHADOW KNOWS."

My brother introduced me to "The Shadow" and many other vintage radio shows many years ago and I have been collecting them ever since. "The Shadow" movie was a wonderful bit of fantasy on the radio and I think that the above film has carried off the character and the feel of the radio broadcasts well. This film may never bring about world peace...but it is a fun film all the same. I recommend it.

Great Homage to a great radio-pulp superhero

I am not that oldtohave listened to the Shadow when he was originally on theair, but my dad got meinto him when I wasabout 9and I've loved him since. The mystic power with which Cranston faceshisfoes is and in my opinion always be an intriguing power, and the movie played up the connection with his own 'shadow' in a very nice way. I lovethis movie.

More Saturday Matinee Plupy Goodness

I've always had a soft spot for The Shadow- the grand daddy of all dark Pulp Avengers. This flawed gem came out in the 90's and was a bit lost in the mix. That said, it's immensely fun, old-fashioned romp. Both Alec Baldwin and John Lone do their best with the so-so script, which is very respectful of the source material but seems to be befuddled as what to do with it all. Along with The Rocketter, I'd have to say this is one of the most underrated Superhero movie of the past two decades.
