Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: ...a pretty kettle of bubbling brew it makes under Mr. Lubitsch's deft and tender management and with a genial company to play it gently, well this side of farce and well that side of utter seriousness. – Frank S. Nugent, New York Times, Dec 12, 2014

Fresh: As the plot has as many complications as characters, much of the fun comes in watching Scripter Samson Raphaelson neatly tangle and untangle them without tying himself in a hard knot. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Although picture carries the indelible stamp of Ernst Lubitsch at his best in generating humor and human interest from what might appear to be unimportant situations, it carries further to impress via the outstanding characterizations by Margaret Sullavan – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: This 1940 film is one of Ernst Lubitsch's finest and most enduring works, a romantic comedy of dazzling range. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

"You've got mail"

Love this movie. The bookstore in you've got mail is the shop around the corner. Love how this original was able to take a modern twist and still a favorite. Highly recommend the 2 movies!

The Shop Around the Corner

I've come to think that The Shop Around the Corner ranks with The Philadelphia Story, It's A Wonderful Life, and Casablanca as one of the finest films of the forties. It's wittty, romantic, and cleverly plotted, and the minor characters are wonderful. It's also one of James Stewart's finest roles; his is a fully-rounded character, and so is Margaret Sullavan's.

Sweet & clever

Such a likable film! I just watched it for the first ime and I would have a hard time saying which is better- this original 1940 version, or the 1998 remake. Jimmy Stewart shows his finest sensitive acting skills here and Margaret Sullavan is both cute and smart. :) Wonderful acting all around, and a clever, engaging story that had me laughing hard at some moments and tearing up at others. Highly recommended!
