Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There's no crescendo in Joe Wright's drama. – Don Groves,, Dec 29, 2010

Fresh: Intelligent and uncompromising, with knock-out performances from Downey Jr. and Foxx. – Dan Jolin, Empire Magazine, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Ultimately, the reason that The Soloist fails is because the writer and the director have been bamboozled by the seriousness of the subject matter. – Toby Young, Times [UK], Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: A handsomely made but tonally uncertain film; it's unsure whether to be an old-fashioned inspirational heartwarmer, or a paranoid prose-poem about ruined lives on the city's dangerous margins. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Oct 15, 2009

Jamie Foxx should win an Oscar for his performance in this movie. Robert Downey Jr. was good, but Jamie Foxx just outshone everyone, similar to Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight. Even if the story does'nt sound so great to you, you should at least rent it to be able to say you witnessed one of the best acting performances ever.

Excellent Film!!

Not only does the movie have the highest echelon in acting with Jamie Foxx and Robert Downey, Jr. but the story is one that all of us should be aware; to think this is a true portrayal of one talented person's struggles, challenges, etc on the Streets of LA & being a former student of Juilliard is absolutely unbelievable until you follow the storyline of the movie and then you have a better understanding of the serious plight of the homelessness. 90K homeless in LA!! how many other Mr. Ayers are living along the streets all across this Country night to night? Most will never develop a friendship such as between Stephen Lopez and Mr. Ayers. This is a beautiful movie, touching but yet serious story, that certainly Mr. Foxx should be highly considered for an Oscar.
