Fresh: A pleasing melange under the direction of Mark Waters, who, after Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, is becoming the go-to auteur of traumatized youth.
Rotten: The movie, based on the best-selling series by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, tells parallel tales of fathers who abandon their children, but it glosses over the trauma of those sagas in favor of special-effects-laden escapism.
Fresh: The storytelling is economical and brisk. In some ways, Waters approaches it more as a pre-teen horror movie.
Fresh: The film is graced with a mostly superb cast, superior special effects, a sparkling musical score by James Horner and a fantasy-filled plot with a bit of moralizing, but, fortunately, only a bit.
Wonderful, Imaginative, Visually Amazing, but PG…Please??!!??!!
I personally entered this movie with high hopes. 1) because it has a wonderful cast (i.e. Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Martin Short, Sarah Bolger, David Strathairn) and 2) because I had read the books and really liked them. To my delight I found the movie to be both close to the story line of the best selling series and absolutely enchanting at the same time. It is a great family film; however, there are some moments that will scare some under a certain age...but that age can only be determined by you as their parents. For that reason I did find the PG rating pushing it. However, those moments that will give the youngsters nightmares my just as well delight and make the movie for the older ones. The acting and story telling of this movie will distinguish it from others. Which will cause it to pull you in right from the start. Especially with the humorous sibling argument between Jared, Simon, and Mallory. Where the intellectual twin Simon declares himself as a pacifist in an attempt to stay out of it. Soon after, Jared finds the "Field Guide" which is where all the problems start, and the story begins to move at a quicker pace. This leads into a mix of lighthearted action, heavy action, and some really dramatic scenes as well as some humor. Overall, I really enjoyed this movie and found it to be a nice get away into imagination. I personally would suggest this movie to anyone looking for a fun time at the movies. All I can hope is that you find this movie to be as delightful as I did.
Great movie! I loved the audio book also with Mark Hamill doing the reading. If you like the Narnia or Harry Potter movies, you will love this one also!!!
