About the Movie

A mother of three spent 11 years in prison for killing a baby she never harmed. That’s what happens when widely held beliefs based on junk science lead to the convictions of innocent people. The explosive documentary The Syndrome follows the crusade of a group of doctors, scientists, and legal scholars who have uncovered that “Shaken Baby Syndrome,” a child abuse theory used in hundreds of U.S. prosecutions each year, is not scientifically valid. In fact, they say, it doesn’t exist. Filmmaker Meryl Goldsmith and national award-winning investigative reporter Susan Goldsmith document the unimaginable nightmare for those accused and focus on the men and women dedicating their lives to defending the prosecuted and freeing the convicted. How did the myth of “SBS” begin and who are the shocking people behind it who have built careers and profited from the theory? Both are unflinchingly identified. Shaken baby proponents want to silence their critics even as countless lives are ruined.

Phenomenal documentary

This is a shocking, brilliantly made documentary on a very important topic. I hope everyone has the courage to open their minds and learn about the facts and story behind Shaken Baby Syndrome.

Fighting for our family to be together again!

I'm still in tears after recently watching this film. My family has been living this nightmare for a little over seven years now. Our daughter whom was 2 1/2 months old passed away and her father was accused of SBS & possibly "bashing" her head against something. I had always heard that one was innocent until proving guilty but we quickly learned that was far from true. You are actually guilty until you can prove your innocence and you must have the funding available to fight for that. We were not that fortunate and had no choice but to rely on a public defender. As my fiancé sat in jail for about a year, his PD seemed to do nothing on the case except hire an "expert" which was a retired family doctor whom NEVER reviewed any of my daughters records including her autopsy report. That retired doctor was paid about $800 to basically give his opinion over the phone based on what was told to him. He also never was required to write out his opinion in writing which he agreed with what the prosecutors were stating had happened and thought my fiancé should take the plea to save himself some time. The PD stated my fiancé should take a plea deal which was suppose to be 3-5 years since he had never been arrested but ended up being 20 years. They also had him sign an addendum to the plea which states he is unable to get out for good behavior and must spend day by day 20 years. That PD became a judge shortly after he pushed my fiancé into that plea. I truly wish my family never had to live this horrible experience and to know that we are not alone breaks my heart. I'm at a lost of words when it comes to my appreciation on everyone that was involved in the making of this film. It does give myself the power to keep fighting and it gives my family and so many others the hope we need. Thank you very much!!!

Junk Science that allows real Abusers to get off

I agree that there are cases where SBS isn’t the cause of death. However, that IS NOT THE CASE the VAST MAJORITY of the time. I know people who have had family members who have been the victims of SBS. Ask any of them and they can point you in the direction of the literally thousands of experts who claim EXACTLY the opposite of this documentary. People like the ones who made this doc are the reason that real child abusers get off.
