Plot Summary

In Nashville, there are 10,000 singer-songwriters chasing success... with one chance in a million of getting it. For Miranda "no relation to Elvis" Presley (Samantha Mathis), that's one chance worth taking. Fresh from New York City, Miranda befriends three fellow hopefuls: shy Connecticut cowboy Kyle Davidson (Dermot Mulroney); Southern belle Linda Lue Linden (Sandra Bullock); and James Wright (River Phoenix), a cocky Texan with brooding good looks and a honeyed voice. Together they begin a rocky ride down Music City's well-worn highway, finding hope, heartbreak, happiness... and The Thing Called Love. Acclaimed director Peter Bogdanovich (The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) presents a dynamic, music-filled film that features Phoenix in one of his final roles (and his only singing one), as well as a showy part for Bullock, who would rocket to stardom the following year in Speed.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Although well acted, with early scenes that deftly sketch the atmosphere, the movie, written by Carol Heikkinen, never takes off. – Stephen Holden, New York Times, Jun 14, 2009

Fresh: Perhaps there's not much new to say about the dues and disappointments involved in breaking into the country music scene, but the scenes are fresh and the emotions real in Peter Bogdanovich's tune-laden, mixed-mood drama. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Perhaps no one could have saved Phoenix, who was not lucky enough to find a higher bottom than death. But this performance in this movie should have been seen by someone as a cry for help. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: It bears as little relation to the real Nashville as Altman's 1975 feature, but director Peter Bogdanovich, the talented cast, and the credited and uncredited screenwriters are so busy conjuring up a charming world of their own that I didn't mind. – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010
