About the Movie
Set in the midst of the Taiping Rebellion of the 1860s, THE WARLORDS stars Jet Li as General Pang, who barely survives a brutal massacre of his fellow soldiers by playing dead, and joins a band of bandits led by Er Hu (Andy Lau) and Wu Yang (Takeshi Kaneshiro). After fighting back attackers for a defenseless village, the three men take an oath to become "blood brothers," pledging loyalty to one another until death, but things quickly turn sour and the three men become embroiled in a web of political deceit, and a love triangle between Pang, Er Hu and a beautiful courtesan (Wu Jing-Lei).

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Epic in scope but intimate in theme, The Warlords heaves with spectacular battles and the relentless sway of self-interest over conscience.
Fresh: It is the rising friction between the blood brothers that holds the story together. The arguments about loyalty and larger missions that tear at their alliance feel both age old and completely current.
Rotten: Although the film is impressive in its physical aspects, the adultery of Pang and his blood brother's wife, Lian (Xu Jinglei), is underdrawn as a sexual skirmish whose influence on events is diminished.
Fresh: Chan's old-fashioned, highly watchable mega-production comes complete with God's-eye surveys of mass carnage, the moist sounds of sword-skewering, and little or no discernible CGI.
good story, good actors, and amazing war sequences. enough said
War is hell
This movie betrays war in its purest form: hell. The sides and motives are not always clear. What is clear is that everyone is suffering, both sides wish for an end and relief. An excellent movie that portrays the bond of three blood-brothers as they struggle to survive. They fight not for their country, but for their brothers and their men. This movie makes war seem so un-glorifying, so hard, and so gritty, that it will make you question your love for glorified war movies. Amazing story, amazing actors, amazing war scenes. Five our of five.
One reviewer said it best - war is indeed hell. And war is all the more hellish when everyone else is depending on 3 men to lead them to victory. But it becomes even more difficult when one of the 3 gives in to his own selfish needs. This is a bit of a departure for actor Jet Li but he has nailed this part well & made me a believer. This movie is filled with heart, passion, backstabbing, glory, & failure. Kudos to all the actors. This is mire than a must see, it is definately a movie to include in your movie library. Definately deserving of all 5 stars.
