Four-time Oscar nominee Ed Harris (Apollo 13), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe) and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Colin Farrell (In Bruges) star in this epic saga of survival from six-time Oscar-nominee Peter Weir (Witness, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). Inspired by an incredible true story, THE WAY BACK begins in 1940 when seven prisoners attempt the impossible: escape from a brutal Siberian gulag. Thus begins a treacherous 4,500-mile trek to freedom across the world's most merciless landscapes. They have little food and few supplies. They don't know or trust each other. But together, they must withstand nature at is most extreme. Their humanity is further tested when they meet a teenage runaway who begs to join them on their quest. A compelling testament to the human spirit, this gripping wilderness adventure is "Peter Weir at his hypnotic best" (Telluride Film Festival).

Fresh: The overall metaphor Weir was aiming for - this idea of enemies so powerful and a war so menacing and confusingly big that no place seems safe except a place absurdly far away - comes through clearly and stays with you.
Rotten: The Way Back represents an exquisite example of style over substance, of vast visuals dwarfing the characters and nearly swallowing the story whole.
Fresh: Weir has always loved atmospheric locales and group dynamics, and here he makes the most of both
Fresh: The film largely misses its opportunities to reflect the enormity of communism, choosing instead the route of a conventional adventure yarn.
I swear I´ve never been so drowned in by a movie. I went with a friend and we both were dying to drink some large fountain drink from outside, BUT WE COMPLETELY FORGOT!! The movie brings you inside and makes you feel almost like you are living the experience!!
Have you seen 127 hours? You can tell that movie does not make you feel the anxiety. This does so amazingly, it makes your heart stay still for 2 hours, and the best part is that the story is true!! I´ve done some research because at first I could not believe people had made it that far, but apparently there are records of witnesses in India that three men were rescued!!
The movie is based on a book written supposedly by one of the walkers. Actually, the writer was just the gatherer of the story from one of the members of the group that made it to India. I would recommend reading the book first, because the book is always better than the movie. But definitely watch the movie afterwards. I don´t like paying $12 for going to the movies, that´s why I movie-hop from room to room and I end up wathing at least three movies on one ticket. But this was the first movie I was satisfied with even though I only watched that one. Amazing
I tried to work and watch the movie ....all I have to say is my work did not get done. Definitely one to see!!
First off, this movie is not true. Almost the whole thing was proven to be a lie in 2006 and the author admitted it. The only really good part of the movie is the part that is true -- that the author was in a Soviet prison camp for a while and then was released. He never walked to India. So after he "escapes" the movie is increasinlgy stupid and obviously made up. Ed Harris' acting is his typical cliche acting. How does this guy continue to get work? Colin Farrell was pretty good. Movie really drags after they leave Russia.
