Plot Summary

A powerful and inspirational story about family, friends, and the challenges we face. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an irascible American doctor who comes to France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees while walking The Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey. What Tom doesn't plan on, is the profound impact the journey will have on him. Inexperienced as a trekker, Tom soon discovers that he will not walk alone.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Estevez is both writer and director of this film, and also turns up in a small role, but he gives the spotlight to his father, who makes quite a lot out of a low-key story that could easily have degenerated into mush. – Neil Genzlinger, New York Times, Oct 6, 2011

Fresh: Open yourself up to this thoughtful, moving personal adventure and you're in for a uniquely memorable experience. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Oct 6, 2011

Rotten: The father-son dynamic is played just right, Tom's sightings of his deceased son arriving at key moments. If only that resonance carried into the rest of the story's episodic progression. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Oct 6, 2011

Fresh: Estevez does embrace the spiritual and religious elements of his movie. But he's as interested in the journey as the destination. – Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News, Oct 7, 2011

Loved it!

This is an excellent story about people coming to grips with personal issues, supporting each other along the way, and how funny yet annoying people can be when you trek with them. Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez have done a great job with this one. If you are the type who can't appreciate and are bored by movies that have no violence, no special effects teams, and such...then I don't recommend this for you. If you are looking for something that will touch your heart, inspire you to step outside of your comfort zones and see the world with fresh eyes...then definitely watch it.

Exquisite.

It is the small moments, the brief encounters, the fragments of conversations and memories that form the soul of this movie--all against the exquisite backdrop of northern Spain. Emilio Estevez does a brilliant job of not rushing us through any of it. He lets each moment become our own. He gives us the time to feel our own hopes, our own regrets, our own compromise as we join the protagonist's journey. He brings to life the soul of Spain--the enduring tradition of the Camino de Santiago, the humility reached by every pilgrim brave enough to make themselves vulnerable, and the beauty of a community that has, for centuries, enabled the pilgrimage of thousands to find their own way. As someone who has aspired to do the pilgrimage for several years now, yet still hasn't made the time, this film was the exact right catalyst to ask myself--what am I waiting for? What are any of us waiting for? If there's anything in your life left undone, untried, untrue, you want to see this movie. It will bring you back to who you are. It will inspire you to be the person you want to be.

Like the movie, I'll keep it simple.

I went to see this movie with my best friend. We both left the theater with smiles on our faces. This is a touching story with a great mix of love and understanding, humility and comedy. If you've seen this, you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, watch it and you will never view life the same again. Thank you Martin, Emilio and Taylor.
