Chicago weatherman David Spritz (Nicolas Cage) is living the life most of us dream of: he's a celebrity, makes a six-figure salary working two hours a day, and is on the short list for the meteorologist job on a national morning show. But his professional successes are overshadowed by his personal failures. He's divorced from his wife, his kids are slipping away from him and even his Pulitzer Prize-winning father (Michael Caine) won't take him seriously.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: In the face of a character no one cares about, can audiences be faulted for asking: Why should we?
Fresh: This is one glum outing, with occasional pings of wry wit and hearty chuckles.
Rotten: Dave's self-involvement is so extreme that he can't see that the bluntly human weaknesses of the people around him aren't his fault. We both pity him and want to shake him; eventually, though, we just become bored by him.
Fresh: The most supremely odd American film of the year.
A Good "Real-Life Drama"
From a drama, most expect a gripping and in-depth tale that could only happen in cinema, such as a "courtroom drama." But few films match up to what Gore Verbinski's "The Weather Man" accomplishes. That is, making a film real. Taking the "drama" out of the drama genre, and making it real-life drama. "The Weather Man" tells the story of one man's struggle to get on top of things personally, despite the fact that he is more than on top of things with his career. Anyone can relate themselves to the protagonist, David Spirtz (Nicolas Cage), because every single person in this world has been through troubling times, struggling to get a hold of things. However, it takes a certain quality for a person to really enjoy and get excited over this film. As stated, this movie is as real as possible; it really seems like the viewer is being part of the actions and thoughts of Spirtz. However, as with real life, it can seem a bit slow and tedious at times. Nevertheless, it is still a great film; just a bit difficult to get into. In conclusion, for a in-depth film of character development with a cinematic story, pick any other drama. For a down-to-earth, real-life film, then "The Weather Man" is the film to pick. ~ Greg
This movie is a meditation on alienation and man's existential quest for meaning in the early 21st century. Especially memorable is the public's holding this fellow personally responsible for the weather, and how they treat him when his predictions are wrong. Nicolas Cage plays an "Every Guy", searching for a more ideal life and realizing that it is out of reach, a fact he comes to accept.
