Narrated by Ryan Reynolds ("The Proposal"), THE WHALE tells the remarkable true story of a young, wild killer whale—an orca—nicknamed Luna, who lost contact with his family on the coast of British Columbia and became famous around the world when he tried to make friends with human beings. THE WHALE celebrates the life of this smart, friendly and transcendent being, who overthrew the established order of humans versus everything else with his determination to make friends with the local residents, despite government officials banning interaction with Luna. Through his life among the locals, Luna challenges preconceptions both political and scientific, making us rethink our most fundamental ideas about the nature of love and friendship.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A documentary ideal for schoolrooms, family viewing and discussion.
Rotten: Docu dotes on its adorable, highly photogenic star, but nonstop voiceover commentary and exclamations of wonderment tend to lessen rather than enhance its impact.
Fresh: Thoughtful and moving, if often heavy-handed...
Fresh: Serious-minded, thought-provoking animal documentary will have a lengthy life, mostly in ancillary markets.
An amazing documentary with unbelievable footage. Make sure to have tissue near-by…it's a real tear-jerker!
Fascinating and Sad
Heart-warming, fascinating and sad all in one! Overall, a movie worth watching. The voice over and commentary was tedious at times, but on the flip side, I didn't need convincing that this creature was anything but majestic and highly intelligent. If you're seeking an uplifting film, this is not it, but it will teach you a few things about the power of companionship and how we completely undervalue intelligent life forms. It will leave you wanting to know why independent organizations or the Canadian gov't didn't do more to secure a future for this beautiful whale especially when independent donors were more than willing to pay every expense. I hope this story becomes a lesson - and not a repeat in history- if this situation ever arises again.
"Friendship is bigger than we know".
This movie is about the need for companionship, and attention, of the sociable whale named Luna (L98). I recommend this movie to everyone. This is perhaps the greatest movie I have ever seen and I am includes all categories of filmography. Watch this, it's a work of art that will send your emotions on a roller coaster, but it might also make you think about blind faith, and how "our need for companionship is not optional, it's necessary." Truly amazing!
