About the Movie

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: The quintessential art film: slow, demanding, and rewarding for those willing to put forth the intellectual effort necessary to puzzle out its ambiguities. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: As for Haneke's handling of the material, his directing is immaculate. Every moment is the product of a penetrating mind and a steady talent. – Stanley Kauffmann, The New Republic, Sep 20, 2012

Fresh: There's no denying this is a coldly commanding tale in which Haneke's signature obsessions simmer quietly as subtext before bursting into the open in the final reels. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Haneke tells this tale a bit too patiently for my taste. But the metaphors are unmistakable, as is the power of the film's message. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, Jun 24, 2010

Don't do this to yourself!

This movie was extremely boring. And in the end, it reached a climax of complete and utter boringness. If you were placed in a sensory deprivation chamber under heavy sedation, you would be more stimulated than you would watching this film. Watching footage of snails racing, played back in slow motion, would be many times more exciting than this film.

It's black and white. It would have been better if it had been black or white.

Seriously, despite heavy violence toward children, there is no plot payoff or message or any meaningful takeaway, other than how easy you can lose two hours of your life. It does bring perspective to the value of time that way.

I'd pass on this one people.
