Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Even if you're familiar with debunked details of her murder, moments in the film have the capacity to startle. – Joe McGovern, Entertainment Weekly, Jun 1, 2016

Fresh: The strength of "The Witness" lies in its recognition that the truth is often not just elusive but unattainable. – Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times, Jun 16, 2016

Fresh: The Witness, from first-time filmmaker James Solomon, is full of arresting moments. – Alexander Nazaryan, Newsweek, Jun 6, 2016

Film is stunning

The Genovese Family has lived with this sorrow and the oh, so many questions for over fifty years. Bill Genovese put action to words, and pieced together the sequence of events of that night. James Solomon directs with precision, the story has overlayment of reconstructed details, sensitive filming of family and witnesses, historical news accounts and testimony. The result is the same. The young life that God created was snuffed out in a cruel way. Kitty Genovese had a right to her life. Now with this film, Genovese children will know who Kitty was and who they have missed. We have a better understanding of what happened that night, and most importantly that Kitty was not alone when she died. The startling tragic story of her death brought social change. Violence has not ended....because we as parents do not instill in our children and in other members of society the value of life, simply by asking---how can you destroy that which God has created?
