Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: A hoot of an old-fashioned British horror film in which being under 10 years old is not a good thing.
Fresh: The moody, beautifully composed production raises it above the norm.
Rotten: It takes quite a time before the pieces of a poisonous puzzle appear, and when they do, they don't always fall into place with clarity.
Fresh: The star's job description is that he be able to react convincingly to a variety of supernatural events and to endure being covered in mud. He has difficulty with neither.
A SMART SUSPENSE FILM THAT WORKS
Daniel Radcliffe is a very talented actor, there's no denying that. And like many others, I was intrigued to see where his career would take him after the "Harry Potter" movie franchise came to an end last year. So when I found out that he'd be starring in a thriller-horror film as his next project, I was a little skeptical, but overall excited. I was so used to seeing him star as Harry on the big screen that it almost felt strange watching him play a different character entirely. But nonetheless, I saw "The Woman in Black", and I have to say I was very impressed with all that it had to offer. The story follows Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe), a young lawyer who is ordered to travel to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scornful woman in black who is terrorizing the locals. While there, he must attempt to uncover her true identity and intent in a desperate race against time. The plot, although it did have its flaws at times, added a lot of chilling twists and turns to keep my interest. I also enjoyed the tense, unsettling score and the beautifully dark cinematography. But what made the movie really work were its suspense tactics. I'll admit, most of them didn't scare me as much as I would've hoped, but they were set up in a such a stylish, old-fashioned way that it didn't really matter. As for Radcliffe, he more than proved himself to be a genuinely versatile actor with his striking lead performance. Anyway, if you're thinking about renting "The Woman in Black", just know that it isn't your typical horror film. It's a very traditional fright flick that forgoes gore for chills. While it may not be the scariest movie you'll ever see, it's still well worth checking out for its great acting, engaging premise and creepy, foreboding tone.
